HMCS Shawinigan, and all 85 of its crew, were lost in November 1944, torpedoed by a German U-boat in the Cabot Strait. At the time, Shawinigan was conducting submarine patrol all alone, while escorting a ferry between Sydney and Port-aux-Basques. Today, HMCS Shawinigan is perpetuated by a modern-day Kingston-class coastal defence vessel. The loss of the Shawinigan is commemorated by Halifax Herald cartoonist Robert Chambers in this memoriam card.

This memoriam card commemorates the sinking of HMCS Regina and HMCS Alberni in 1944. The Regina served from 1942 to 1944, mainly as a convoy escort vessel. She also participated in the naval component of the invasion of Normandy, just 5 months before her tragic end. The Regina was sunk on August 8, while attempting to rescue survivors from an American ship. 30 crew were lost, off the coast of Cornwall. The Alberni was sunk just two weeks later, on August 21, while performing convoy duties near the Isle of Wight. 59 hands were lost. A memorial commemorating the Alberni was established in British Columbia last year. This memoriam card is part of a series of WWII commemorative illustrations by Halifax Herald cartoonist Robert Chambers. You can explore the rest of the series as we add to it over the next several weeks.

Today we share a memoriam card for HMCS Louisburg, illustrated by Halifax Herald cartoonist Robert Chambers. The Louisburg was sunk in 1943, after being bombarded by enemy aircraft during convoy duties. A new Louisburg was commissioned shortly afterward, serving out the duration of the war. This is the second memoriam card in a series we’ll be posting regularly throughout August. Check back often!

    The connection to Norway

Nova Scotia has particularly strong ties to Norway in regard to the convoys of the Second World War. Following the invasion of Norway in June of 1940, members of the Royal Norwegian Navy and Army, and their Merchant Navy, maintained training, repair and recuperation bases in Nova Scotia.
